Who Let The Dog In?

​Are you welcoming a new addition to your family?  No I am not talking about a new baby, but something that, in many ways, is very similar.  I am talking about a new pet dog.  It may not be human, but you will give it lots of love and care as it is now part of your family.  At the same time, it will take a lot of effort to care for a dog.  Like babies, they are very curious and can be destructive.  Ifor yours and the dog's sake, it is important you prepare your home for it's arrival.

​Cover electrical outlets and wirings
Like babies, puppies will be teething.  They will try and chew many of the items in your home.  Take special attention to electrical outlets and exposed wiring.  It is not uncommon to find dogs who will try chewing on these which can electrocute them.  They can suffer from shock, burns, or even death.

Make sure the trash cans are closed and secure
The smell of food scraps thrown away, or the enticing prospect of rummaging through garbage cans may be too much for a pooch to resist.  Make sure you use garbage cans with lids that can be locked.  They may try to tip it over and scatter the contents.  Not only will you want to keep garbage away from your dog, you'd want to avoid it making a mess of your home.

Toxic supplies like cleaning materials should be locked and kept away
Cleaning materials like bleach, laundry soap, and others can be dangerous to your dog.  Be careful where you put these items and make sure they are out of reach from your dogs.  The same goes for pesticides and other pest control products you may have.  Keeping them under lock and key would be best.

Lock up medicine
The same is true for medicines.  You are not only worried about overdoses, but almost all human medicines are not compatible for dogs.  These lead to many complications and poisoning.  Make sure the dogs have no access to you medicines.

Close the doors
A simple and often overlooked technique when controlling dogs is closing the door.  If there is a room you do not want them in, simply close the door.  You may put baby gates and other obstructions to keep your dog in areas you want them in.
